Before you release: a practical checklist for independent African artists

Uploading a song is only one part of releasing it professionally. Artists who prepare their assets, rights information and promotional plan early have fewer last-minute problems.

1. Finalize the recording and credits

Confirm the final master, song title, featured artists, producer and songwriter credits. Make sure every collaborator agrees on their contributions and the release plan.

2. Prepare accurate metadata

Use consistent artist names, explicit-content labels, release dates and ownership information. An ISRC identifies a particular recording; a UPC identifies the release product. Ask your distributor whether identifiers will be supplied or preserved.

3. Check artwork and permissions

Use original or properly licensed cover art. Verify image permissions, samples, beats and any third-party material before submission. Store evidence of your permissions.

4. Allow time for delivery

Schedule your release with enough lead time for distributor review, platform processing and pitching. Delivery and editorial consideration are never guaranteed, so avoid announcing a date before your distribution plan is ready.

5. Make lyrics part of the campaign

Prepare an accurate, approved lyrics sheet and songwriter information. Timed lyrics and platform delivery depend on the relevant service's capabilities and rights requirements.

6. Build the audience journey

Prepare a Smart Link, short-form videos, press materials and a clear artist profile. Track results honestly and never purchase artificial streams.

7. Keep your records

Retain masters, artwork files, splits, contracts, identifiers, invoices and royalty statements. Good records protect your catalogue if you change distributors.
